In celebration of Women's History Month, third-grade classes have been exploring the lives of some of history's most impactful women. As part of their studies, students wrote literary essays based on biographies of remarkable women who have shaped the world. Through this project, the students not only learned about these women but also developed their writing and critical thinking skills.
Third graders delved into the lives of women who made significant contributions in various fields, from civil rights and politics to science and the arts. Each essay focused on the unique accomplishments and challenges faced by these women, highlighting how their courage, determination, and resilience helped pave the way for future generations.
One of the most poignant moments came when students analyzed a famous portrait of Harriet Tubman. The image depicts Tubman with her hand outstretched, symbolizing her leadership in the fight for freedom. Tubman’s gesture of extending her hand is seen as a symbol of both compassion and strength, a message that resonated deeply with the students as they reflected on her life and impact.
This project not only educated students about the importance of women in history but also encouraged them to think critically about how they can make a difference in their own lives. As they wrote about these courageous women, the third graders learned valuable lessons about leadership, perseverance, and the power of standing up for what is right.
In honor of Irish American Heritage Month, first-grade classes at Grafflin came together to reflect on the things that make them feel lucky in their everyday lives. Through a heartfelt lesson that highlighted the spirit of Irish culture and the importance of gratitude, students shared the things they cherish the most.
The activity encouraged our young learners to consider normal things they experience daily, inspired by the Irish tradition of celebrating good fortune and community. Students reflected on everything from the love of family to the simple joys of friendship. Many also celebrated the beauty of nature, mentioning their favorite parks, trees, and even the sunny days that brighten their afternoons.
The students’ reflections were displayed as "Lucky Charms" cereal pieces in the hallway, where they could share their thoughts with other classes and reflect on the meaningful ways Irish culture and values are celebrated across generations.
